The Three Types of Tears and the Science Behind Them
While everybody cries, not everybody understands the science behind our teardrops. Ironically there’s a lot more to tears than meets the eye. Tears are lacrimal salty fluids that consist of oil, water, mucus, and protein. There are three different types of tears: Take a look below to learn more about each!
Emotional Tears (Psychic)
Every person across the world has experienced a moment in their life that was so touching, whether sad or happy. Such instances include a personal loss, celebration of an accomplishment or excess laughing among others. Emotional tears occur after the cerebrum triggers the endocrine system to release hormones to the ocular area.
They contain chemicals such as leucine-enkephalin (improves the mood and reduces pain), adrenolorticotropic (shows high-stress levels) and prolactin. Scientists have proven that psychic tears are beneficial as it rids the body of the toxins and chemicals that build up during a stressful period. Holding these tears will only make an individual increase their risk of hypertension and heart disease.
They are protective tears film that is omnipresent in the cornea. Their core role is to lubricate and clean the eye and keeping them from drying. They contain water and antioxidants and the eyes secrete not more than one gram daily. Failure to secrete the lacrimal fluid leads to eye disorder (Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca).
Chefs and cooks are quite familiar with these tears as they protect the eyes from harsh irritants like onions. They occur when cornea sensory nerves communicate irritation to the brain that in turn sends a hormone to the eyelid glands. Other irritants include tear gas, smoke, perfumes and dusty wind. They clean the eye as they contain more than 95% water.
There are some people who view crying as manipulative and as a way to gain sympathy. Well, crying can do you more good than harm and this can be approved by individuals in some countries that attend crying clubs. The clubs encourage reading of emotional books and watching emotional movies. Whether you are a man or woman, old or young you have every reason to have a good sob when situations allow.
