EyeTunes: 10 Great Songs About Eyes

The ocean stirsthe heart, inspiresthe imagination& brings eternaljoy to the soul1

You know iTunes, of course. But have you heard about…EyeTunes?

No? Well, you’re in luck.

I’ve put together a small gallery of pictures and lyrics, inspired by hit songs about eyes. I hope you enjoy browsing through this list as much as I enjoyed putting it together.

It’s no wonder that eyes come up so often in songs, especially romantic ones. Not only is our eyesight a precious resource to our wellbeing, but our eyes themselves also say so much about us. Looking into someone’s eyes is not just a mindfulness technique or a way of signifying that you’re being present and attentive. When we look into people’s eyes, we can connect with them. Our eyes are a precious facial characteristic and a beautiful part of who we are.

So, consider these EyeTunes a visual mixtapean ode to the poetic ways that songwriters and singers celebrate the beauty of sight.

EyeTune: “Them There Eyes” by Billie Holiday

This jazz song has been performed by Louis Armstrong, but it was made famous by Billie Holiday whose 1939 version became a big hit for the star. Starring in the Billie Holiday biopic Lady Sings the Blues, Diana Ross recreated the song for the film and the movie soundtrack 1

EyeTune: “Beautiful Eyes” by Taylor Swift

Back when Taylor Swift was more country than pop, soon after she released her self-titled debut, her fans wanted new music. But Swift was busy in the studio working on her second record. To tide her fans over until her sophomore effort, she quickly put together the Beautiful Eyes EP (which mostly had alternate versions of tracks from her first album) and sold it exclusively to Walmart and online.

EyeTune: “That Light In Your Eyes” by Leann Rimes

Depending on your age and your familiarity with pop country artists, you might remember when Leann Rimes stunned the world in 1996 as a cute little girl (she was around 13 years old!) with a great big Patsy Cline-era voice. This song was one of the singles from her debut album Blue.

3

EyeTune: “I Only Have Eyes For You”

This song has been recorded by everyone from Peggy Lee to Art Garfunkel. But the version by The Flamingos is perhaps one of the most famous. It was featured in classic films like American Graffiti, My Girl and A Bronx Tale.

4

EyeTune: “Bette Davis Eyes” by Kim Carnes

Back in 1981, a husky-voiced blonde named Kim Carnes ruled the airwaves with this hit song, which won Grammy Awards for both Record of the Year and Song of the Year.  The song also became the best-selling single of the year in the U.S.

5

EyeTune: “In Your Eyes” by Peter Gabriel

Rais your hand if you’re a fan of 80s movies. The Cameron Crowe class, Say Anything, will long be remembered for the seminal scene where the character Lloyd Dobler (played by Jon Cusack) holds up a boombox blasting “In Your Eyes” in front of Diane Court’s bedroom window. This song is just about as romantic as it gets. The best part: The gorgeous vocal contribution from Senagalese singer Youssou N’Dour.

6

EyeTune: “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor

This song set the soundtrack to the memorable montage sequence in Rocky III where Sylvester Stallone and Carl Weathers train together. It’s arguable one of the most triumphant musical compositions ever recorded.

7

EyeTune: “Brown Eyed Girl” by Van Morrison

Probably Morrison’s signature song.

8

EyeTune: “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” by Frankie Valli

Having been covered hundreds of times, this 1960s hit might seem timeless and ageless. A notable remake: Lauryn Hill’s version for The Conspiracy Theory soundtrack in 1997.

9

EyeTune: “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” by The Platters

Eartha Kitt sung it, Frank Sinatra’s second cousin sung it. But The Platters defined it. Fun fact: Smoke Gets In Your Eyes is also the title of a 2014 book about…working in a crematory.
